The "life" in Second Life takes place on different islands. You have to know which island to be at to get the most out of your Second Life.
For big projects and residents with a requirement for a lot of space, Second Life offers the possibility to purchase an island. The Owner of an island can design it individually. The price for an island is 1.675 US-Dollar for a little bit more than 65.000 square meters. The monthly fee is 295 US Dollar (May 2007).
Here is a selection of design features and options:
- Six topographies are available
- The placement of the island in the Second Life world is free in certain limits
- The owner of an island can create his own topographies of the island.
- Any time the owner of an island can change the texture with the "Texture Tool" in the "Estate Menu".
- The name of the island can be chosen within certain conventions. (i.e. three words with maximum 20 characters)
- Islands can be jointed with other resident's islands.
- Ownership of an island can be transferred to other residents.
- The Owner can place events on his islands for other residents.
More details that the owner can fine tune: Maximum number of residents allowed on the island, height of water, texture and structure of the ground, position of the sun. Also the owner can define rules that organize the access to the island.
"Land Store" is the main channel to buy an island. Usually ten days after the purchase the island is ready to use.
